Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon episode 1!
- An article from AMC hints that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’s variant zombies in France may have been manmade and possibly created by different teams of scientists.
- The antagonistic group known as the Cause in episode 1 could be responsible for creating the variants, although their motives are unclear at this point.
- The show may explore the role of humans in the creation and evolution of the zombie virus, potentially shedding light on its origin.
AMC has hinted at where France’s zombie variants in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon really came from. At the start of the series premiere, Daryl encounters a group of Burners, a new type of zombie with acidic skin and blood. Isabelle later confirms for Daryl that they are just one of multiple types of zombies that can be found all throughout France.
In a post from AMC Talk, it’s hinted that variant zombies found in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon may have been manmade. The article mentions the post-credits scene of another spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, that revealed the existence of faster, more aggressive zombies in Paris. Dialogue between two characters in the scene also imply the zombie virus began in France, which was the epicenter of a worldwide apocalypse.
Who Could Have Made The Variant Zombies?
The Walking Dead: World Beyond‘s post-credits scene indicates different teams of scientists in France were possibly responsible for the zombie virus. Since Dr. Jenner from the original show mentions variants in the scene, this means variants have been around since the start of the apocalypse. If that’s the case, then it’s possible variants are also manmade offshoots of the original illness.
The ending of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon episode 1 reveals the Cause is using Walkers for unknown experimentation. While there’s no concrete evidence yet, this new antagonistic group could have been responsible for creating variants in France. If that’s the case, then it’s unclear why they would do something like that given how much more chaotic it would make survival in the country.
Another possibility is that the Cause are trying to find a cure for the zombie virus, with variants acting as an intended consequence of their experiments. But since the Cause are The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s new villains, they may have a more nefarious purpose for their zombie tests. With AMC hinting at humans having a role to play in the creation of zombie variants, it seems Daryl’s new show may expand on the evolution – and perhaps the origin – of the zombie virus.
