It’s no secret that movie ticket prices are often out of control, which is why some people decide to skip theaters altogether. That’s why VOD (Video on Demand) still has a place in the streaming era. For a fee that’s often cheaper than two movie tickets, you can rent or buy some of the most recent cinematic hits.

This month, Barbie is the biggest new arrival, but she’ll have to share some shelf space with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Sound of Freedom, Strays, and more! The best places to rent or buy these movies are often the major digital outlets like Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and  Google Play.

Below, you’ll find our updated list of what’s new on VOD and digital in September 2023.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

The TMNT are ready for battle in this image from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Paramount Pictures

We’ve lost track of how many reboots the TMNT have had at this point. But the latest iteration, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, has the benefit of actually portraying Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Raphael (Brady Noon), and Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.) as believable teenagers who just want to be accepted by humans. After befriending April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), the Turtles believe they can win over the public by being heroes. But that’s easier said than done when they go up against Superfly (Ice Cube) and his gang of mutants.

Release Date: Out now

You can rent or purchase Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem on Prime Video and other digital outlets.

Strays (2023)

The animated dogs of Stray.
Universal Pictures

There have been plenty of talking dog movies, but nothing quite as profane as Strays. Will Ferrell provides the voice of Reggie, a lovable Terrier who is abandoned by his despicable owner, Doug (Will Forte). While living on the streets, Reggie is befriended by other stray dogs including Bug (Jamie Foxx), Maggie (Isla Fisher), and Hunter (Randall Park), who convince him to seek some very R-rated revenge on Doug. Trust us, this is not a movie for kids. But if you love raunchy adult humor, it might be for you.

Release Date: Out now

You can rent or purchase Strays on Prime Video and other digital outlets.

Birth/Rebirth (2023)

Marin Ireland in Birth/Rebirth.
IFC Studios

Birth/Rebirth is kind of a maternal Reanimator. Marin Ireland stars as Dr. Rose Casper, an unorthodox woman who secretly conducts experiments that could bring the dead back to life. When Rose successfully revives a young child named Lila (A.J. Lister), Lila’s mother, Celie (Judy Reyes), initially believes that Rose has stolen her daughter’s body. But once Celie realizes that Lila is alive, she and Rose decide to do whatever it takes to keep Lila alive no matter how far they have to go to do so.

Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy (2023)

Jon Voight in Desperate Souls: Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy.
Zeitgeist Films

Midnight Cowboy was one of the seminal films of 1969, and it’s notably the first (and only!) X-rated movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture. In Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy, writer and director Nancy Buirski takes a look back at the film and lines up appearances and footage of Midnight Cowboy cast members Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro,  Jennifer Salt, and Bob Balaban, cinematographer Adam Holender, and even director Brian De Palma (who did not helm Midnight Cowboy). Dustin Hoffman didn’t participate in the film, but this is perhaps the most comprehensive Midnight Cowboy documentary to date.

Release Date: Out now

You can rent or purchase Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy on YouTube and other digital outlets.

Barbie (2023)

Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ken singing in a car in Barbie.
Warner Bros. Pictures

Barbie is by far the biggest hit of the year, and it’s still hanging around in theaters even as it heads to VOD. It also represents an existential crisis for Barbie (Margot Robbie) herself, as she arrives in the real world alongside her constant companion, Ken (Ryan Gosling). Barbie soon befriends a Mattel employee named Gloria (America Ferrera) and her daughter, Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), both of whom teach her a lot about being our world. The problem is that Ken has also learned things in our world that may have dire consequences when he returns to Barbieland without Barbie.

Release Date: September 11

You can rent or purchase Barbie on Prime Video and other digital outlets.

The Hill (2023)

Colin Ford and Dennis Quaid in The Hill.
Briarcliff Entertainment

Dennis Quaid gets top billing in the new sports biopic, The Hill, but the real star of the movie is his on-screen son, Colin Ford. This film is based on the true story of Rickey Hill (Ford), a baseball player who wanted to go pro despite his degenerative spinal disease.

Quaid plays Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, while Joelle Carter co-stars as his wife, Hellen Hill. Rickey’s desires cause friction in his family, but he won’t give up on his dreams no matter the price.

Release Date: August 12

You can rent or purchase The Hill on Vudu and other digital outlets.

My Animal (2023)

Amandla Stenberg in My Animal.

The first thing you need to know about My Animal is that when a young woman named Heather (Bobbi Salvör Menuez) struggles to control the beast within, that is not a euphemism. Heather has inherited a bad case of lycanthropy … which is just a nice way of saying that she’s a werewolf.

To keep that part of herself under wraps, Heather has lived a very sheltered life until she meets Jonny (Amandla Stenberg), a woman who ignites passions in Heather that she can’t suppress. And that just invites her inner wolf to come out and play.

Release Date: September 14

You can rent or purchase My Animal on Prime Video and other digital outlets.

Sound of Freedom (2023)

Jim Caviezel in Sound of Freedom.
Angel Studios

Sound of Freedom was one of the most unexpected hits of the summer, and according to some reports, the most popular movie among ghosts as well. It’s loosely based on the life of Tim Ballard (Jim Caviezel), a man who has devoted himself to saving exploited children from captivity.

In the movie, Ballard rescues a child named Miguel (Lucás Ávila), whose sister, Rocio (Cristal Paricio), is still missing. To get her back, Ballard is willing to go to extremes and leave behind his job at Homeland Security.

Release Date: September 15

You can rent or purchase Sound of Freedom on Vudu and other digital outlets.

The Good Mother (2023)

Hilary Swank in The Good Mother.
Vertical Entertainment

The Good Mother is a somewhat ironic title because the leading character, Marissa Bennings (Hilary Swank), is estranged from her adult son. But after her son is brutally murdered, Marissa decides to get her own justice for his death.

To do so, Marissa teams up with her son’s pregnant girlfriend, Paige (Olivia Cooke). What they find together makes them question what they really knew about Marissa’s son. But they’ve come too far to turn back.

Release Date: September 19

You can rent or purchase The Good Mother on Vudu and other digital outlets.
